Tweet Twin partners we will be talking to company owners how they can incorporate Social Media in their company growth plans. There are strong trends emerging in all sectors that show companies need to seriously consider their skills, abilities and online presence. The idea that being online means you have a web site is fast becoming outdated thinking as Social Media technologies and networks are facilitating new ways to engage with consumers, partners and the market as a whole.

Formula One exhibition brings the race experience to windy Wellington

The exhibition tells the story of winning driver Bruce McLaren, whose legacy lives on in Formula One racing with Team McLaren featuring in the starting grid of every major Formula One race since 1966 and marks the 50th anniversary of New Zealand’s first Formula One Grand Prix victory at the 1959 US Grand Prix.

New Zealand’s other greats, Denny Hulme and Chris Amon, are also celebrated. All three began their careers at New Zealand racing events, and their early victories here laid the basis for their international success – a pattern which continues today with upcoming drivers like Brendon Hartley. Teenage friend and best mate Phil Kerr of Bruce McLaren, now resident in Auckland along with Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley were the three hired guns that created the organisation that manages the Formula One series today.

Nine Formula One cars will be on display, including the incredibly successful Cooper T51; Brabham BT20; McLaren-Honda MP4/4; Williams FW14B; and the mighty Ferrari F2004. The exhibition traces the design and technological innovations that have driven the sport from the 1950s to the 2000s, as well as the personalities that front it. New Zealand’s only manufacturer of full size full bodied actual race car simulators, SimDeck Formula Simulators, joins an elite group that is working towards similar success bringing the Formula One race experience into the virtual reality world of simulation.

Shell V-Power are the principal sponsors of the Formula One ™ – The Great Design Race (www.tepapa.govt.nz/f1) on display in the Visa Platinum Gallery at Te Papa.

Te Papa’s Chief Executive, Dr Seddon Bennington said that ‘Te Papa will be the only Southern Hemisphere venue for Formula One ™ – The Great Design Race. ‘On and off the track, Kiwis have excelled at the highest levels of this prestigious, high-pressured sport and this exhibition celebrates the New Zealand contribution to Formula One.’

Visitors will get close to the action with a high-octane events programme featuring expert floortalks by former McLaren mechanic Walter Wilmott, and renowned motorsport commentator Bob McMurray. There will also be race car simulators, and special display cars, such as McLaren’s M8A Can-Am car, the Hulme Super Car, and A1Team New Zealand’s A1GP car ‘Black Beauty’. Full events details are listed at the website, http://www.tepapa.govt.nz/f1.

Among the world’s most popular sports, Formula One is watched by over 350 million people each race weekend. The exhibition’s principal partner, Shell, has been involved with Grand Prix racing since the 1930s, and their technical partnership with Ferrari is considered the most successful partnership in Formula One.

Associate Sponsor Bridgestone is the sole tyre supplier in the world’s foremost single-seater motorsport categories, including Formula One, and was instrumental in securing the Ferrari F2004 for the Te Papa exhibition.

Shell NZ retail general manager Mark Forsyth said, “we’re thrilled to have been part of Te Papa’s great team bringing Formula One ™ – The Great Design Race to New Zealand as ‘Shell and Ferrari have forged a fantastic partnership on the race track”.

For enthusiasts in Auckland wanting to experience the Formula One race experience are able to visit SimDeck Formula Simulators in Albany, Auckland by appointment for life size virtual reality simulation in the immersive world of SimDeck. Unlike many manufacturers of Formula One Simulators, SimDeck recreate the virtual race experience using it’s exclusive huge digital ICE Digital Daytime projection screens, custome built full size petrol powered 4m cars, full immersion impact sensors and optional DOF platforms. By the end of the year SimDeck Formula Simulators expects to be able to embed actual live Formula One races in real time into the SimDeck virtual reality world enabling drivers of a SimDeck Formula Simulator to actually race against actual drivers all in real time on a virtual version of the actual track.

North Shore Racing to the Finish Line in the F1 Hot Seat

Racing to the finish line, the crowds hung on as the suspense built, eager to see who could pull away from the starting grid and take the lead. Which of the finalists in the Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards would be a winner.

On the 6 August more than 300 North Shore business people gathered together at a function at North Harbour Stadium to congratulate the 36 finalists for the Awards. They found themselves not only in the business hot seat, but literally in the hot seat of a Formula 1 race car simulator with their egos on the line. The eventual winner whom finally emerged at the end of a high speed evening was Aaron Tudor from Rad9 Computer Services. He was able to display a steady hand at following the optimum drive line, knowing when to brake and accelerate that eventually saw him blitz the other rookie drivers to take the coveted “Fastest Finalist.

The evening recognised the Awards’ 17 North Shore-based sponsors, that will shortly lead into the Gala Dinner on 28 August when the Awards winners for the Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards will be announced.

Terry Hoskins, chief executive of primary co-sponsor, Enterprise North Shore commented “The evening’s success shows the abundance of committed optimism in the North Shore business community, at a time when it is needed most,” says “The interest shown by businesses at the Finalist Function and in the Awards overall shows the dedication and commitment of North Shore enterprises towards the economic success of the City,” he says.

Westpac general manager of business banking, Ian Blair stated, “We look forward to unveiling the overall winners at the Gala Dinner and showing Westpac’s continued support for the North Shore community.”

“Westpac is delighted to be a primary sponsor of the North Shore business awards which is the ultimate recognition of local business greatness,” says In its 12 year history of the Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards, 2009 is the most successful with a record breaking 158 entrants taking up the challenge to demonstrate their business success.

Simdeck Formula Simulators sister activity ICE AV Technology Ltd has previously entered the Westpac Enterprise North Shore Business Excellence Awards.

At last an authorative guide to having a career in the motorsports industry

At last an authorative guide to having a career in the motorsports industry

The Greatest Racing Spectacle in the World for 2009 is now in the history books. We silently kept our fingers crossed for our favorite driver for his magical moment, 100 years to the day when the famous Indy 500 circuit was opened. Sadly our Kiwi did not create a unique piece of world history in the largest sporting event 100 years later. Even though a tyre change problem stole Scott’s moment to secure a second Championship Race Title he was still our hero on the day with a splendid overall performance. Who could have imagined that when that first race was held, that a century later from a land as far from Indianapolis as you can go, that a young driver would not only win a Series, The Race, but that he was on the line to win the acclaimed Indy 500 for a second consecutive year…we waited with baited breath.

SimDeck Formula Simulators lets you recreate your racing spectacle in the unique one of a kind virtual and blended live world of SimDeck Virtual Reality. We create the reality in Virtual Reality.

In the beginning a group of men had a dream...today a Kiwi driver is chasing his dream 100 years later.

Kiwi racer Scott Dixon team became a Dad late July 2009, which by my recollection it will be the first Kiwi born into a Indy 500 race champion family… how cool is that! Also being a Dad I know Scott and Emma will have immense joy in the years ahead.

Melbourne Formula One Track

Recent visitors have been espousing how life like the experience is which is what we are aiming to achieve and to take the realism way beyond what people can re-create at home.

This is what North Shore Mayor and now boy racer, Andrew Williams had to say.
I had the real pleasure of trying out the SimDeck Formula Race car simulator at a function I attended in May 2008 – and I’ve got to say that the whole experience was something I could imagine you could very easily get hooked on!

The sheer exhilaration of feeling like you are actually driving a high performance vehicle at speeds of up to 300kph left me as a total convert to this concept which is truly exciting and immensely challenging to those among us who are Formula One followers.

A combination of life size virtual world images, real time dash gauges, vibration sensory feedback and enough sound to recreate the on-track atmosphere resulted in a blurring of reality and virtual reality for me and made the racing seem absolutely realistic. Andrew William, North Shore City Mayor, http://www.northshorecity.govt.nz

Bunnings World Speed attempt this weekend.

Join us for a day of attempts at the lap records at Kyalami Circuit

Join us for a day of attempts at the lap records at Kyalami Circuit

The Bunnings Warehouse North Shore Community Fun Day, will be an opportunity to see Lap Time Race Demonstrations on the African Kyalami Circuit, the scene of Formula One and more recently A1GP races.

Pro Sim Driver, Kevin Andreassend will give demonstrations throughout the day, of racing on the South African Kyalami circuit and will attempt to match some of the fastest lap times set during the recent A1GP series.

Final Race fastest lap: Monaco of 1.m 27.269s.
Fastest on Final Practice Day – Lebanon’s Daniel Morad recorded 1m 30.816s
Frances Nicolas Prost ended the rookie session quickest with a time of 1m 33.149s
Kiwi’s Earl Bamber Final race fastest lap was 01m:27.569s
To maintain some level of respectability Kevin needs to at least match America’s time of 01m:35.130s
Nigel Mansells (Formula One) fastest lap set in 1993 was 1m:36.39s.

Between record attempts members of the public will be able to purchase tickets and try their hand at racing in the SimDeck race car simulator and set their own record attempt.

Actual on board cameras from drivers at the Kyalami Circuit.

The demonstrations will be an apt reminder for the public, that driving is a skill needing constant assessment, whether it is a Formula Driver or a family driver. Sadly as this bulletin is being posted tonight, five people have just been killed in the south of Auckland in wet dark conditions taking a corner to fast. Some will say it was an accident, I would say it is an error of judgment. The NZ Government places a cost of $5,000,000 for each death on our roads – a huge cost on the community. Maybe it is time the Government started to seriously consider driving simulators as part of the training and licensing regime. They are a common training tool in many areas and in some places compulsory. Given that licensing costs are about to increase for ACC, maybe its time to stop leaching motorists and improve driving skills by giving them real tools to learn. Leave your thoughts, I’d be interested to hear them and for further indepth thoughts I have blogged here about the role of professional simulators in teaching drivers to drive their family car.
